The Debian Project is a worldwide volunteer organisation that creates a family of Operating Systems, most notably Debian GNU/Linux. This is used by many people as the basis of specialised OSs (including various government sponsored GNU/Linux variants like LinEx (Spain) LiMux (Germany), as well as more general purpose derivatives like Ubuntu — see the Ubuntu UK group)
Debian’s slow release cycle (averaging 2 years between releases) and commitment to upgrade-ability makes it very well suited for running servers for stable infrastructure. The fact that it is not backed by a corporation (and yet, exists) ensures that there is practically no circumstance which could result in Debian not being available and well supported in future.
