  • Following on from your comment Chris I think we desparately need some credible case studies illustrating the potential. I suspect most of the UK public sector will currently be deploying/developing proprietary solutions.

To repeat Gary’s question does anyone here know of specific open source GIS projects within UK Government sector that could be discussed in public?

  • I think more are using open source GIS that would be visible: how would you know (unless the organisation told you) if they were using Mapserver and PostGIS to serve map data to their desktop clients? There is no purchase trail for anything other than any closed source desktop software in use, no evidence from polling their web/Internet connections, etc..

We are working on a solution for a public sector client that utilises open source, but the front end webserver is still IIS, even if the maps and data queries are all done through open source software.

At the open source GIS conference in Nottingham earlier this year it was mentioned that the Defra Spire project is using open source components (MapServer). That is the best example I know of.

I have heard of some organisations looking at PostGIS and there are various small scale initiatives with other tools. Sometimes the momentum for OSS emerges outwith departmental IT adding additional challenges in what are locked down environments.

  • Public Sector Forums are interested in identifying OS GIS implementations. Over 20 local authorities are using OS but are there implementations beyond local government in the public sector or even other sectors?

  • Hello Group.
INSPIRE. Out of interest, how far along are you with this and how are you building your metadata catalog?
I understand that Gemini is a popular schema to work to but I’d be much happier if their was a proper ratified
    INSPIRE schema to work to.
